The sign above it is for the Commercial Hotel (formerly Confederate Hotel) and is attached to the building now known as The College Square Building.
Notice how wide College Avenue is. It would remain this way until 1980 when the sidewalks were widened, trees and benches installed and “College Square” created in an effort to revitalize the then-dying downtown business district.
that’s a pretty successful revitalization project.
